The untold historical story of Naib Subedar Gajendra Singh Chand, an unsung Indian hero from Uttarakhand who displayed indomitable courage during World War II. Hailing from Badalu village in Pithoragarh district, he was awarded Soviet Russia’s highest military honor, the ‘Order of the Red Star’. Amidst fierce attacks by Hitler’s army on the perilous Caucasus front, he successfully delivered crucial supplies to the Russian forces.
The world learned of this brave warrior in 1975 when the Russian ambassador arrived in Pithoragarh searching for him, only to find the veteran threshing wheat in his field. Unlike Victoria Cross recipients, he never received recognition in his own country. Perhaps due to the shadow of British rule, we failed to fully honor the Indian soldiers who fought for Russia. The warrior forgotten by Indians is remembered by Russia to this day. In 2020, Subedar Gajendra Chand’s family was honored during an event organized by the Russian army.
