In the Himalayan village of Maniguh in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district, a remarkable community-led initiative is redefining rural development through books, learning and collective action. Recognised as India’s First Community-Led Library Village, Library Village Maniguh has grown into a vibrant knowledge ecosystem with more than 20,000 books, a network of Pustak Mandirs (Book Temples), digital learning opportunities, community homestays, and initiatives linking education, culture, ecology and local livelihoods.
Founded through a journey of reverse migration, the project demonstrates how libraries can become catalysts for social transformation in remote mountain regions. In a time when many Himalayan villages face challenges of migration and limited educational opportunities, Library Village Maniguh offers children and young people spaces to read, learn, imagine and create new possibilities for the future.
