उत्तराखंड की परिधान परंपरा का सफ़र | History of Uttarakhand’s Clothing

These days, in the hilly regions of Uttarakhand, it’s quite common to see women in salwar suits doing household chores, climbing banyan trees to pluck leaves, or weeding the fields. At the same time, young men and women wearing jeans, t-shirts, and tops can be seen strolling around towns and marketplaces. Not only that, it’s no longer surprising to see a beautiful bride in an expensive imported lehenga or gown taking the traditional seven vows with a smart groom dressed in a stylish tuxedo or sherwani — even in a typical mountain wedding setting. All of this reflects how much interest and awareness there is in the hills about new clothing styles and trends, just like in other parts of the country. What’s interesting is that these modern clothes — jeans, t-shirts, kurtas, salwars, ghagras, suits, and sherwanis — were introduced to Uttarakhand relatively recently. Most of these came to the region only about 300 years ago, and some arrived barely a hundred years back. In fact, most of these modern outfits, which people wear today with pride, style, and excitement, originally came from places like the Persian Gulf or Europe. But here’s the catch — many of the clothes that are now considered comfortable and practical also came from outside India. Over time, they became so popular in our society that they are now seen as essential. Some people may raise questions about cultural values and traditions, but the truth is, society embraces what meets the needs of comfort and survival. Take the example of the “pyjama” — a word and garment that feels completely Indian now. But did you know that “pyjama” is actually a Portuguese word? It likely came to India when the Portuguese arrived on our coastal shores during their imperial conquests. उत्तराखंड के पर्वतीय इलाकों में आज के वक्त में सलवार सूट पहने कोई महिला घर का काम-काज करने से लेकर बांज के पेड़ पर चढ़कर पत्तियां तोड़ती और खेतों में निराई-गुड़ाई करती आपको दिख जाएगी तो जींस टी-शर्ट और टॉप पहने युवक-युवतियां कस्बों-बजारों में टहलते हुए भी दिख जाएंगे। इतना ही नहीं, किसी ठेठ पहाड़ी शादी में महंगा इंपोर्टेड लहंगा या गाउन पहने किसी खूबसूरत दुल्हन का डैशिंग टैक्सीडो सूट या शेरवानी पहने स्मार्ट दूल्हे के साथ सात फेरे लेते हुए दिखना भी अब कोई आश्चर्य की बात नहीं है। ये सब बताता है कि पहनावे के विभिन्न नए प्रकारों और ट्रेंड्स को लेकर पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों में भी देश के दूसरे इलाकों की तरह ही अच्छी-खासी दिलचस्पी और जागरुकता है। दिलचस्प बात यह है कि जींस टी-शर्ट, कुर्ता सलवार, घाघरा, सूट और शेरवानी जैसे इन आधुनिक परिधानों का उत्तराखंड से परिचय कोई बहुत पुराना नहीं है। इन परिधानों को उत्तराखंड पहुंचे यूं ही कोई 300 साल ही हुये होंगे। इनमें से कुछ तो महज सौ साल पहले ही उत्तराखंड में पहुंचे हैं। बहरहाल, हनक, खनक और सनक के साथ रौब दिखाने वाले ये तमाम अधुनिक परिधान भारत में फारस की खाड़ी या यूरोप से आये हैं, मगर दिलचस्प बात ये है कि अधिकतर आरामदायक और सुविधाजनक कपड़े भी बाहर से ही यहां पहुंचे हैं, जो आज हमारे समाज में न केवल लोकप्रिय हैं बल्कि अनिवार्य हिस्सा बन चुके हैं।
